Sarasota, FL (February 1, 2020) – The Sarasota Ballet proudly presents the world-renowned Paul Taylor Dance Company as it pays tribute to its late founder Paul Taylor with “The Celebration Tour” coming to the FSU Center for the Performing Arts in Sarasota, FL from 28 February to 2 March 2020. As part of an international celebration of Taylor – who died in 2018 after helping shape the art of modern dance during his 64-year career – the Company will perform three masterworks from his collection: Cloven Kingdom, Polaris, and Syzygy. In addition, due to sold out performances and audience demand, The Sarasota Ballet has added an additional performance on Monday, 2 March at 7:30pm.

Artistic Director Michael Novak described Mr. Taylor as “The last of the pantheon of choreographers who defined the distinctly American art of modern dance.” He continued, “Taylor was hailed as ‘the master of light and dark’ for good reason: his repertoire of 147 dances covered an unprecedented range. There were dances that took an unflinching look at war, depravity, and death. Other dances were very funny indeed. And many reminded us of the poignancy of uninhibited love and hope. Looking at this man’s oeuvre, and deciding how to honor him, has been at the forefront of my mind. And, in taking a cue from our Founder, I decided to do what has never been done: launch a multi-year global celebration that brings together over twenty masterpieces spanning seven decades in his great repertory. Titled ‘The Celebration Tour,’ it’s an unprecedented opportunity for audiences and students to connect with Paul Taylor’s history like never before.”

“We look forward to presenting some of Mr. Taylor’s greatest works in Sarasota,” said Mr. Novak.

Iain Webb, Director of The Sarasota Ballet, shares Novak’s enthusiasm for Taylor’s work. “Mr. Taylor had a remarkable ability to capture an extraordinary range of emotions through his choreography. He could plumb the depths of humanity, exposing the most gruesome and unnerving components of our spirit, then turn on a dime and transform the stage into an expression of buoyant, resplendent joy, all with a seamless fluidity. He will be deeply missed by the dance community worldwide, but we are enormously fortunate to be able to celebrate his legacy here in Sarasota with his Company’s performance.”

This Season, The Sarasota Ballet has undertaken its own celebrations of the life and works of Paul Taylor, including open lectures, intimate looks at the rehearsal process behind The Sarasota Ballet’s company premiere of Mr. Taylor’s Brandenburgs, a screening of the documentary Paul Taylor: Creative Domain, and culminating in these performances by the Paul Taylor Dance Company.

This presentation of the Paul Taylor Dance Company is dedicated in loving memory of Marjorie S. Isaac, on behalf of Dan and Debi Isaac. Marjorie served as a Board member of the Paul Taylor Dance Company and was a longtime supporter of the organization.

The Sarasota Ballet’s presentation of the Paul Taylor Dance Company is sponsored by WEDU.
