In 1991 the goal of Dance – The Next Generation (DNG) was to nurture the development of the entire individual with emphasis on discipline and self-esteem and the desire for higher education. It was initially planned that the students who attained high academic levels would be given the opportunity to continue their studies on scholarship at the University of South Florida (USF) or a college of their choice if they did not wish to become professional dancers.
Classes at first were limited to only classical ballet instruction. But since 2001 the dance courses have expanded to include ballet, jazz, composition and elements of dance.
The DNG program today remains a part of the education component of The Sarasota Ballet. It continues to provide the opportunity for those who are most at risk of dropping out of school to participate in a 10-year, full-scholarship program in dance, but the focus is no longer on career dance training. Rather, it focuses on instilling self-discipline inherent in the study of dance, resulting in achieving academic goals and becoming a positive, contributing member of society.
