In 1991 the goal of Dance – The Next Generation (DNG) was to nurture the development of the entire individual with emphasis on discipline and self-esteem and the desire for higher education. It was initially planned that the students who attained high academic levels would be given the opportunity to continue their studies on scholarship at the University of South Florida (USF) if they did not wish to become professional dancers.
The DNG program today remains a part of the education component of The Sarasota Ballet. It continues to provide the opportunity for those who are most at risk of dropping out of school to participate in a 10-year, full-scholarship program in dance. The focus is no longer on career dance training, rather it focuses on instilling self-discipline inherent in the study of dance, resulting in achieving academic goals and becoming a positive, contributing member of society. Upon completion of the program and graduation from high school, students may apply for scholarships to State College of Florida or USF Sarasota-Manatee.
