De Valois, Balanchine & Robbins closes the Season on 28-30 April 2017 at the Sarasota Opera House. The performance features a range of works to showcase the versatility of The Sarasota Ballet. This program includes George Balanchine's Valse-Fantaisie, a beautiful example of Balanchine's romantic and classical choreography, and the nimble virtuosic showcase that is Tarantella. Dame Ninette de Valois’ remarkable Checkmate is widely regarded as her signature ballet and a cornerstone of British ballet repertoire. The program ends with The Sarasota Ballet premiere of Jerome Robbins’ Fancy Free. The ballet follows the story of sailors on leave in New York City on a summer night, where there’s romantic mischief competing over the attentions of a girl. Fancy Free later became the widely-popular musical comedy On The Town and is known as one of Robbins’ greatest successes.
